It's a Wrap - Christmas 2011

So it Begins.

The weekend after Thanksgiving, we bought a tree...

and decorated it.

Penny didn't hesitate to snuggle up underneath the small branches.

and with the pup perfectly placed, why not take a picture?

okay this was our 10th picture, Pen kept laying down

The tree was up, our picture taken and December was officially here! Needless to say, our spirits were definitely high; especially since we had our first overnight visitor...

Emily and I at the Greensboro Christmas Tree lighting event!

After thinking long and hard over the next week, Taylor and I opted out of gift giving to family back in Texas, which to our surprise was a little bit of a let-down. It took me less than a few hours to shop for Taylor and I was officially done for the holidays. NEVER thought I would be so sad by this quick and easy shopping experience. However, with the extra money to spare we decided to give to Advent Conspiracy.  They are a great organization and I highly recommend considering them if you’re looking for something to give too.

Christmas Eve.

Time for baking...

 The final product.
Yes, they are as good as they look! :)

Leaving for the Christmas Eve service!

Christmas Day.

Well, I'm not sure why but I didn't take many, I mean ANY, pictures of our Christmas morning. I did however snap this photo of Penny when I finally found her!!!

Other Christmas events included: placing pictures from Christmas cards on the fridge - thanks to everyone who sent us one! Watching It’s a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol. Fun holiday drinks. Receiving Papa's Remington calendar. Attempt my first holiday ham. Staying up waaaayy too late, the dollar theater and many walks in the neighborhood.

We definitely missed spending time with both families this holiday season but overall it was a very merry Christmas for Taylor and me.  2011 - It's a wrap.

Thanksgiving in a Nutshell

Although our Thanksgiving numbers were narrowed down to two
this year, that did not stop Taylor and I from feasting!

Preparing the meal without others around gave me a sense of ownership over the holiday.
This independence is new to me, because growing up I always had a bandwagon to jump on. And now, with a whole day of cooking behind me, it felt wonderful to celebrate with Taylor!

Can't forget Penny!

After a big meal, we set out the next day for the foothills at Morrow Mountain. We decided it might
be fun to go camping on one of the last “warmer” weekends.

Highs: 60's  Lows: 30's

Well, we arrived a little late due to us forgetting our tent! So we drove ALL the way back home! Who forgets their tent when camping!?

Because we arrived so late, the next morning we realized we were at the worst campsite around. We were surrounded by RV's and lights all night. So we moved campsites the quick way:

Smokey Foothills
On our 4 mile hike... fallen trees everywhere.

Hunter, the small boy below, hung out with us nearly all day. He made his way to our campsite
in the morning, met Penny and the rest is history. Apparently his parents knew where
he was the whole time but we think he was lying to us so he could stay... I know Penny didn't mind.  Chatting up a storm with Penny about tricks and being a good dog, Hunter was very neighborly.

Happy Thanksgiving!

LuckePenny

On a lighter note, what have I been up to?

Disclaimer: I emailed a few of you already about this new endeavor… so it might sound familiar :)

Well to keep it simple, I decided to start a shop on Etsy – LuckePenny!  Taylor suggested that I “settle-in” before the stresses of job hunting take over. However, if you know me at all, then you know I am very quick to unpack and settle-in. You probably also know that when I’m sitting, I’m crafting. All this to say I decided to engage Etsy for a bit…

I’m just now getting started and have only told a handful of people about this endeavor. Frankly, my confidence lacks a bold voice sometimes; but I am ready to face my fear in order to do what I enjoy doing most – making gifts!
I chose to pursue burp cloths, bibs and headbands. Most of my friends and family are in this “baby stage” and I wanted to join in on the fun. Also, if all else fails I have nice homemade gifts to give away :) My shop is not yet complete, as I still have headbands to upload and more bibs to make! (I hope to be doing this soon.)
Also, I came to the conclusion LuckePenny can’t be a shop if no one knows about it. So please take a look, tell your friends and if you’re on Etsy, please add me in your circle, or maybe even favorites ;)
To be a little more personal about LuckePenny I have to say this new venture has brought joy into my daily life. It has also provided exposer of my character, challenging me in ways I never expected.

I am learning…
to work within my capabilities
to not outdo myself with big ideas or expensive fabric
to become more confident at being vulnerable (thanks blog!)
to enjoy what I'm doing even if I’m at home
to manage my time well
to remember to stop sewing when there’s a greater need at hand!

These are all personal quirks and maybe too much to share for this blog but these are things I am learning and developing despite my personality. I truly have enjoyed every moment of this project and have seen a new side of me come out while attempting Etsy.

Needless to say, I hope Etsy is something I can do for a bit. If it doesn’t work out – I’ll get a job and probably never stop sewing when I have free time :)

So, I’m not sure where LuckePenny will end up but that’s the exciting part... right!?

Adventure Awaits

Over the past couple of weeks, I realized I have not answered many of your questions about our move; why we moved? How Taylor and I were doing? His job? My work? and what spurred everything on…

So, I wanted to take a few moments and honestly explain how we got to North Carolina and where our hearts were during the time of deciding...
Blue Ridge Mountains

Short Version:
Taylor got a job, we were ready for adventure and what better than this season of life!?

Long Version:
First let me start with, Taylor and I considered leaving Austin during our first few months of marriage. We tossed the idea around thinking it would provide us with the space needed to figure out “married life.” Plus, what better than having a great adventure when you’re newly married!? It wasn’t a set plan in our minds but was most definitely a consideration. I understand for many of our friends “figuring out married life” seems a bit excessive and for others who are older it may appear admirable yet pretentious. Nevertheless, we prayed about it and the answer was no.

In late summer, we came back to the topic in light of events that took place in the past six months or so. After seeing situations play out (most for good) yet a growing tiredness in both Taylor and I, conversations about our busyness, relationships, being young and current commitments slowly started coming up between us.

We gathered, we were too busy, our relationships were not bearing fruit, and we didn’t know how to make wise commitments. We were saying, “Yes” to things that didn’t align with our goals in marriage. The shocking part? These commitments are things considered beneficial to one’s life. (i.e. family, friends, community group, serving others, etc.) The problem was never these groups; it was us.

As we began to pray about our second year in marriage, we both felt a peace about leaving Austin.  We knew we needed to make adjustments whether here or elsewhere. Not to mention, just the thought of the opportunity to have an excursion with each other was so thrilling!

Fearless One
Taylor then contacted a company held in high regard by his pervious employer and asked if there were any opportunities available.  To our surprise, they set-up an interview a couple weeks out. Taylor at this point had been with his previous employer for a little over a year and absolutely loved the people and environment; it would be hard to leave. So we prayed that if we didn’t have a peace about this new company then he would not accept any offers. Obviously, since we’re in North Carolina, you can conclude that the interview went well and Taylor felt very welcomed. (We all  know Penny LOVES his new job!)

Now, Taylor and I both understand that North Carolina does not fix our “Yes” problem and are aware that we CAN have healthy boundaries in Austin. We also, without a doubt know we are not running from the fear of saying “No.”

As we continued to pray about this, there seemed to be calmness when relating the move in all areas of our lives. We never pictured the move as a fix but more as a given opportunity to enhance our circumstances as we pursue the good in our marriage. Then, when sharing the news with family, friends and small group, their overwhelming support helped confirm the peace we had.

The part that took us off guard was how fast we had to move. We had two weeks to pack up and make the move East. I know for a lot of our friends we didn’t feel as though we had time to share the news and say goodbye but it’s all a part of the journey. We know we will be back to visit soon; besides with how world connects over social media, I am sure we don’t feel too far at all!
The Grizz...

We couldn’t be more energized about this new season in life as Taylor and I learn to grow as a couple. We have a big adventure awaiting us and we are eager to take the next couple of steps!  We are young with no chick-a-dees, and LOVE to explore. We recently took our first loooong hike in the Blue Ridge and Taylor has already planned our next camping trip in the mountains! Not forgetting his excitement in growing a full bread for winter – truly “The Grizz!” :) Personally, I cannot wait to embrace this opportunity at a fresh start! Taylor is the perfect teammate and I couldn’t be happier to be by his side on our adventure!

So with that said – here’s to new beginnings, fresh foundations, and beautiful countryside… okay, little cheesy… but truly, I am excited about this next season of life with my Taylor Bear!

Rags to Riches?

Ever since we made the journey East, Penny Lane has developed a new side of herself.  She has revealed her own voice, grown a true independence, become a cuddle bug and with no doubt gained an audience of lovers.

Her vocal expressions to go outside are more persistent than ever. Before moving to Greensboro, Taylor and I could count on one hand how many times Penny whined to go outside. Now, whenever  Pen gets the chance she sits by the door, gives us the "puppy face" and announces her feelings.

Aside from Pen's expressiveness, her self-determination is the most obvious.  She no longer follows our every step; Pen doesn’t mind sleeping in the other room or care when we walk outside without her… she just does her own thing.

Despite her newly gained confidence to be "Penny" she has developed a more responsive side. She listens so well and follows our commands fairly quick. She did this before but now it is unmistakable Pen is our pup. If either one of us sit by the fire or lay on the floor to watch a movie, she can’t stand to be away. She comes close and cuddles with us... often overtaking our blankets.

She is our sweet girl, but not for too long. I hear she’s pretty popular, I mean, pretty spoiled at work...

(Chewing on a cow ear by Taylor's desk)

She got the privilege of “working out” with the president of the company:

She’s made new friends and followers:

(not sure if the video works)

Pen gets her hair bushed everyday, nice big cow ears to chew on, and special benefits like going to the bank with the accountant...

The list is endless and will continue to grow. Needless to say, I think of all three of us, Debutante Penny is adjusting best to North Carolina.

Settling In...

As we arrived in Greensboro for the first time last week, we decided to grab some pizza at a local joint up the road. Trying to order our food, it wasn’t hard to figure out that we were newbie’s. After asking us where we were from, the guy behind the counter preceded to welcome us with, “Welcome, you know… Greensboro is just a dirty ole town.”

Great! …Thanks? How old are you!?

Seriously, he looked about 16 and obviously knew how to encourage us in our excitement! We can’t help but laugh as our first week has been very pleasurable. We still have a lot to learn about Greensboro but there are a couple of things we enjoy.

Thus far, we love our incredibly nice community at Steeplechase (our apartments.) We've had no trouble settling in. Here are some pictures of our new place:

Left side is our bathroom and laundry room
Right is our Bedroom

We also love the gorgeous scenery that everyone seems to be enjoying alongside of us. Here are some pictures of the trail that lead into our apartments. This trail takes you into a nice community of homes where most of the backyards are open and back-up to the walkway.

Also, a few side notes on the weather: Typically 60 degrees and sunny during the day and high 30's at night. We haven't turned on our air or heat since we've arrived and our windows typically stay open all day.

Taylor mocking me :)

From what we’ve heard, the peak colors of fall have NOT arrived yet. It travels east from the mountains and should be here in the next week. We were told that we would know when we saw it. Honestly, it’s so beautiful, I’ll have to ask when the time comes...
